Youth and Community

SVEC supports youth, school and community projects and events each year through monetary donations, labor and equipment. Sponsorship includes Little League Baseball, Project Graduation, Junior Rodeo and junior livestock shows and auctions. The Cooperative repairs ball field lights, hangs community banners, decorates community Christmas trees and installs and repairs community flagpoles. Employees are involved in assorted civic groups, coach youth sports, lead youth religious activities and serve with area volunteer fire departments.

NEVADA YOUTH ENERGY SEMINAR

The Nevada Rural Electric Association Youth Energy Seminar, also known as YES Camp, is held each July at Boreal Ski Resort in the beautiful Sierra Mountains near Truckee, California.

The mission of YES is to teach cooperative principles, nurture the development of emerging leaders, increase appreciation for the electricity and cooperatives in our communities and foster an understanding of the workings of government.

YES participants are exposed to fascinating and engaging speakers and are encouraged and challenged to actively participate in all activities. An extra benefit to YES is that life time friendships are made between the participants.

Each year the Cooperative sponsors two high school students for the Nevada Youth Energy Seminar. Please contact Lynn Culp, Member Service Manager, if you have questions about or are interested in attending YES Camp.

Electrical Safety Demonstration

Each year SVEC gives numerous electrical safety presentations at area schools, service clubs, fire departments and agencies on request. The presentation lasts about one hour and includes the use of a live electrical board, which demonstrates the nature of electricity and shows a number of dangerous activities and how to be safe around electrical power lines. The presentation may include a video for either children or adults.

Please contact Lynn Culp, Member Service Manager, if you are interested in scheduling a presentation for your school, group or club.

Electrical Safety

Respect the Power Of Electricity Here are a few safety tips that will help you avoid injury when you are near sources of electricity.

  • Your body acts a conductor so never touch outdoor wires or downed power lines with your body or any other objects. Always assume a downed line is active and stay away from it. If a power line falls on your vehicle, stay inside until emergency workers arrive. If the vehicle catches fire, jump clear, making sure your body is completely free of the vehicle before touching the ground.
  • Watch out for overhead power lines when using a ladder or other tall objects, such as irrigation pipes.
  • Never climb in a tree that has power lines running through it.
  • Keep electrical appliances and toys away from all water sources.
  • Never place anything near or inside a lampshade—except a light bulb, of course.
  • Don’t use damaged or frayed electrical cords. Never let cords run through door-ways or under carpets. Don’t overload an outlet by plugging too many cords into it.
  • Never fly kites, model air-planes or balloons near power lines or in the rain. If your kite gets snagged on overhead lines, don’t try to untangle it. Call your utility.
